HarperCollins will publish Patrick O'Brian's Master and Commander titles as e-books in the UK and Commonwealth, beginning with the complete Aubrey-Maturin novels, on 19th December.
The series is set in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, with the 20 books to be released digitally including Master and Commander, Post Captain, H.M.S Surprise, and The Mauritius Command. Master and Commander, the first in the series, was originally published in 1969. Norton will publish the title digitally in the United States.
HC c.e.o. and publisher Victoria Barnsley said: "We are thrilled to have concluded a deal with Patrick's estate through his long-standing agent, Vivien Green at Sheil Land Associates. This series of novels has been a jewel in our crown for more than 40 years, and continues to attract new readers from all around the world. The e-books will give them greater choice about how to read the books, and gives fans old and new a chance to revisit the work of one of our greatest contemporary novelists."
HarperFiction publisher of estates, David Brawn, said: "The success of the film and the popularity of the books means that a sequel has been the subject of constant speculation ever since. But the films barely scratch the surface of what is in the books. It is a privilege to be publishing Patrick O'Brian, and a pleasure to be able to do so in a new format that is bound to lead to even more people discovering and falling in love with this extraordinary body of work."
This deal follows the agency pushing for higher royalties for digital backlist, with Sonia Land publishing 100 Catherine Cookson novels as e-books through her own company, Peach Publishing, earlier in the year, bypassing Cookson's physical publishers Transworld.
