Scardino given Pandora Award

Pearson c.e.o. Marjorie Scardino has won the Women in Publishing Pandora award. The award looks to recognise a "woman who has made a significant and sustained contribution to the publishing industry". Scardino will step down from her role at the end of this month after 15 years in the post.

 Sam Missingham, The Bookseller's head of marketing and events and the co-founder of Futurebook, was named runner-up. She commented: "We should never forget to celebrate being women - we are creative, generous, challenging and occasionally a tad complicated - which sounds a lot like publishing. But seriously, woman have THE best attributes to excel in publishing. Which we do."

Meanwhile, 91 Magazine founder and editor Caroline Taylor won the New Venture award, with Tolulope Popoola, founder of Accomplish Press, runner-up. Rivkie Baum, founder and publisher of SLiNK magazine, featuring plus size models, received a special commendation. The New Venture award celebrates "a woman who has done pioneering work on behalf of under-represented groups in society".

Papoola said she was "thrilled and honoured" to be a runner-up. "This is an exciting time in publishing, and if you're creative and work hard, this is the best industry to be in," she said. Accomplish Press publishes contemporary fiction and children’s books for the Black British and African/Diaspora market.

 The prizes were presented at the Women in Publishing Awards ceremony and Christmas party last night (12th December) at the University Women's Club in Mayfair, London.
