Rainbow Wellington held their annual book review night last Thursday at Unity Books Wellington.
Fifteen queer bookaholics each took the mic to give the gathered crowd a flavour of the latest GBLTI book releases.
A dozen titles as diverse as Joanne Drayton’s recent biography of Anne Perry and No Straight Lines, a brand new compilation of queer comics, were given 3 minute speed reviews by faces new and old. Labour deputy leader Grant Robinson gave a glowing review of Australian politician Michael Kirby’s A Private Life, whilst fellow Labour MP Charles Chauvel gave a no less erudite taster of Mario Vargas Llosa’s Dream of the Celt.
Kathryn Carmody won review of the evening for her entertaining delivery for the recent Orange Prize winning novel The Song of Achilles. She bagged herself a copy of Annie Leibovitz’s Pilgrimage, a book documenting the photographer’s personal project to visit and document the homes and possessions of her historical figures that have influenced her.
Pilgrimage had been given a glowing endorsement earlier in the evening by Unity bookseller and freelance photographer Marta Starosta.
Oh, and there was wine and cheese too.
