Be cautious about buying "print-on-demand" books

A musically obssessive friend of mine told me this morning that he is enjoying "Backbeat" - the bio of Earl Palmer, the New Orleans/Los Angeles drummer ("Lucille"... "You've Lost that Loving Feeling").
He thought I'd be interested to learn that he couldn't find it locally so ordered it from Amazon, who said it was the 2000 p/b edition, but what actually arrived was a print-on-demand version.
He went on to say -
The back page says, "Made in the USA, 18 Oct 2011". But I could tell from the murky definition of the cover pic and type, and most especially from the pics inside which are worse - far worse - than xerox copies. These guys are black and you can't see their faces.
