The No Complaining Rule
I’m pretty sure everyone has heard of “energy vampires” – those people who can suck the very life and energy out of a room the moment they walk in. I’m also pretty sure people understand the basic concept of being positive. If we put positive thoughts into the world, positive results will come back to us. But what do we do when we encounter a complainer? Someone who simply can’t seem to find the positive in any situation and always has something to complain about? What do we do when this complainer is at our work? There is nothing harder to do then to get up in the morning knowing that someone is going to complain to you – or about you – at work today. You drag your feet, putz around the house, and ever so slowly get yourself to wok – to find the complainer waiting for you at the office door: “Where have you been, your late, I’ve got a ton of stuff to do and now I’m behind because you couldn’t get here on time.”
Not the most compelling response. I know it would not drive me to arrive more promptly. The new book by bestselling author Jon Gordon, The No Complaining Rule, may be just what you are looking for (and what the world needs). Born out of the simple idea of being positive instead of negative, The No Complaining Rule
is a delightful read that may just change your life.
However, this is not some dry book that just uses bullet points to give positive examples or actions that one can use in the face of negativity. Those never seem to work, because they don’t set the actions into an example. How are we supposed to be positive in the face of negativity without some bigger context or examples? This is where Jon Gordon really shines in this book: he sets the whole “rule” into the context of a story.
Told in the context of a very negative situation at a particular company, The No Complaining Rulefollows Hope across two weeks of crisis. By giving us a context and situations with real people, I was able to see how I could apply the positive ways of dealing with negativity at work that Jon describes. On top of this, the book offers a handful of useful action plans, assessment, and online resources for dealing with complainers and for making your work place – and overall company – a positive place to work.
Since reading this book I can personally say with all honesty that I have begun to approach negative situations in a new light. I no longer complain about them. I no longer let them get me down. I no longer absorb the negative energy and then spew it out on my co-workers. No, instead I try and follow Jon’s simple no complaining rules: practice gratitude, praise others, focus on success, let go, and pray and meditate. This book, these “rules,” and the accompanying positive energy that they have helped instill in me have made a tremendous difference in my day-to-day life and my work place social dynamics. If everyone read this simple, straightforward, positive book business would be a much different entity then it is today – profits would go up, people would be more productive, and work would be a much more positive experience. Everyone should read The No Complaining Rule,I know I’m suggesting it to everyone at my work – and I’m starting to see a positive difference.
Thanks Jon. No more complaining for me.

No problem Jim, it was really my pleasure as I've had a much more positive outlook on my daily circumstance since reading Jon's book. A lot of my own angst I've discovered has come from my own inability to deal with complainers, whiners, and the sort. No I have several tools that help me and have made a positive impact on my life. Now just to spread the positivity around...
