The Winds of Asharra
As a kid, I used to always look forward to summer for a number of reasons. Sure, school was out and the pool opened, but that was always secondary to my real desires. Summer was the time that the mountains opened up, the snow melted, and I could go off into the woods and wander for hours on end. I would always pretend I was an archaeologist, looking for lost cities or artifacts, trying to find secret passageways and hidden gems. I never did find anything, but those early days instilled a sense of adventure in me that still lives on today - a sense of adventure that I love to cultivate in the books I read. Science fiction and adventure narratives are two genres that really bring that sense of adventure out. I can place myself in the story and relive those days of exploring new lands (or planets), finding long lost treasures, and overcoming major challenges. The Winds of Asharrais just such a book.
We all know and love the Indiana Jonesseries of books and movies. Indiana takes leave from his stogy museum job to travel to the far reaches of the earth in the name of science and archaeology. But what ever happens after he returns with those mysterious artifacts? You never find out. The Winds of Asharra
picks up the adventure where the Indiana series leaves off. Now to clarify, this book is NOT a sequel to the Indiana series. Rather, what I mean is that in this enthralling adventure by author R. Leigh, the main story begins with the decipherment of one of these mysterious objects and the consequences of what such an object has for the individuals who hold it.
A renowned scholar, Evan Durant, is contacted by the government to help in deciphering one of these mysterious, long-lost objects. During the course of his investigation, his son Victor and Victor's friend Zoe happen upon it in Evan's house. Picking it up to look at it closer, the two kids are suddenly transported to another land - Asharra. This is the part of the story that takes us one step further then the Indiana series. Instead of the story being about the adventure of recovering the object, The Winds of Asharrais about what the object means, it's power, and the adventure that ensues.
I'm not one for giving away plots or summarizing the story for the reader. How fun would that be? Rather, I try and capture why this book - or any other - deserves a reading. Here, the reasons are clear. Not only is The Winds of Asharraan excellent science fiction novel, but it provides us with the chance to reflect on society, personal development, and the greater challenges we are facing as a species on planet Earth.
Victor and Zoe, once transported to Asharra, are befriended by Theyna. There, Victor - who later changes his name to Torvik - meets his soul mate Ionera as they become involved in saving Asharra from destruction. Filled with musical dragons, telepathic trees, and evolved felines, The Winds of Asharrais a novel that will keep you reading. In fact, you'll have to simply because you will want to know if Zoe finds her soul mate, if Eimiv (the astral crystal that created new life on Asharra) will be saved, and just what the mysterious object was that started this whole adventure. If you are looking for a book to have with you this summer, then I couldn't recommend another. Author R. Leigh has crafted an enthralling, all-encompassing story that is sure to keep you happy for many a day - I know it did for me.
