Poetry that is Accessible to Everyone: A Great New Poetry Collection

The Mansfield Lighthouse Cats

Poetry is one of those forms of writing that you either get or you don't. A good poet only needs a couple of words to hit the reader with a series of emotions, images, and thoughts. However, a bad poet can leave the reader wondering what the poet was trying to achieve. Luckily, Charlotte Barnes is of the former type of poet - not the latter.

The Mansfield Lighthouse Cats is a book of poetry that is accessible to all. Although the subject matter of the poems are diverse and eclectic, because of the author's wordsmithing ability, the book holds together as a complete body of work.

One of my favorites from this collection is entitled "Warriors on the Line"

Helmet to helmet,
Eye to eye,
Hearts pounding fast,
Warriors on the line.

Big brawny bulks,
Bones, blood, and hide,
Strong stalwarts guarding,
Warriors on the line.

The diversity of images and emotions that this simple poem conjures up in me is what drew me to this book. Is the poem about football? Or perhaps about the human species and our constant battle mentality. Could the author be referencing something else? Perhaps a more personal story? This is why I love poetry - the imagery and emotions that a good poem provide are unequaled. Another penetrating example that I will leave you with is:

"Soar"

Don't soar
To suit the whims of man
Soar
Because you know you can.

Thanks for taking the time to read my book! My topics are diverse, but you can usually count on love, loneliness, work, and football making it in there somewhere! I write on yellow legal pads before work, during lunch, or after I escape the day job!

I wish you continued success with your blog and a lots of luck in 2008!
