In Pursuit of the Enemy
The other day I received this new mystery by A.C. Ellis. As I was going to be occupied with family activities for the next couple of days, I didn't really think I could get to it until after the New Year. On Christmas day my family didn't get going until about 12:30 pm, but because I get up early during the week, I was awake before anyone else on a cold, snow white Colorado morning. Unwilling to do more than make coffee and get back in bed, I grabbed In Pursuit of the Enemy and began to read.
Let me tell you, this was one rocking read! The first scene has you hooked - a couple of Asian American men (one who is a former North Vietnamese Army officer) wake up in the Rocky Mountains. Having been drugged, they are disoriented, lost, and being hunted!
What? Men being hunted like wild animals? Why? I put on more coffee and delved into this mystery, going through an entire pot that morning.
Meet Brad Carpenter, a homicide detective living in San Diego. Sitting reading the morning paper he is suddenly shocked to recognize a face in the local obit section. The obit is about an Asian American who Brad recognizes from his days in Vietnam. He fought against this man! This man killed his best friend! How was a former North Vietnamese Army officer able to become an established business man in San Diego - and why was he murdered in Colorado? Brad Carpenter wants to know these questions, and in the process he ends up not only looking for the hunters of this former Army officer, but he also becomes hunted by them in the process.
In Pursuit of the Enemy is one of those mysteries that not only brings in the past, but also the present. I recognized many parallels to today's situation with Iraq, our soldiers over there today, and the memories of Brad Carpenter as he uncovers mystery after mystery. I don't want to give away any more information, let's just say that the mystery is complex enough that you don't really understand what is going on until the final moments of the book. I'm glad that this is "Brad Carpenter Mystery #1", because I can't wait to read another mystery by A.C. Ellis or continue following Brad Carpenter as he investigates another case. If you are into mysteries, this one should be on your reading list for 2008.

I agree, In Pursuit of the Enemy was a great read. I've got a couple of A.C. Ellis' other books and have them on my nightstand to read next. I'll let you know how they turn out...
